It's not possible to request reimbursement of costs.

There you go, are you happy now? Or rather, it is certainly possible to request re-imbursement but good luck actually receiving reimbursement.

These sort of costs are incurred by you to determine whether or not there are the sort of issues that you have encoutered, whether they are subsidence or any other issue that might affect the value and / or your ability to want to proceed with the purchase. Those checks must be carried out by somebody therefore they will incur a cost. The money is not wasted money because until you have spent that money you will not necessarily know that whether or not there is a problem, that is why you spend that money. If there is a problem with the property then you could say that money has been well spent because it means that you now will not make the bigger commitment of not outlaying the purchase price for that property. So in this case you have paid for work that has confirmed underpinning and so as a result of that you decided not to proceed with the purchase, in that sense I would consider that money well spent if the alternative was to buy a house which had significant issues which would affect value and resaleability in the future.
