Flight cancellation due to Hurricane Dorian

Just over three weeks ago our United Airlines flight to Jacksonville FL was cancelled due to hurricane Dorian. We received an email from them as we were on our way to London for an overnight stay before the flight.
Went to Heathrow that day and spoke to United who re-arranged the flight to Atlanta instead for the next day (as we were due to travel there from Jacksonville). Had to re-arrange the car hire from Atlanta instead of Jacksonville which added £400. An extra night in a London hotel. Plus the original night in Jacksonville forfeited as couldn't cancel at a short notice.
Have only just returned from our holiday so are wondering where we stand. It turns out the Jacksonville airport was open that day for incoming flight but not outbound ones. Could see roughly half of arriving flight were cancelled. We assume United cancelled due to not wanting to be stuck there.
Do we stand anywhere with a cancelled flight or insurance claim? At the moment it added over £500 to the holiday.
Any suggestions massively appreciated! Thanks in advance!

I don’t know the answer but you may be better posting in the specific flight delay thread0

I would think this would be a travel insurance claim.
I am sure that you understand that weather, especially the magnitude of a hurricane, if not something within an airlines control.0 -
Sure, except the airport was open that day and many flights did arrive as scheduled. I'm only looking to recoup the out-of-pocket expenses that resulted from this cancellation, not really looking for compensation.

With both recent hurricanes, the paths and speeds were unpredictable. Airports announced operating restrictions and closures based on the best forecasts that they had. Airlines worked with those.
Sometimes best laid plans just go wrong. No ones fault.
It was your additional costs that I suggest you discuss with your travel insurer.0
