Openoffice

Just seen the Microsoft Office 2007 promotion for full-time students and just reminded me that openoffice often messes up graphs and others bits and pieces in my assignments when i open them in Msoffice programs having saved in MSoffice format in Openoffice.

Is there a way around this or another free office program that could stop this is annoying for submitting work by email to tutors

Update Open Office? Or why not tell them you use Open Office instead of Microsoft Office, then they can get a copy too. It's not like it's going to cost them anything and they must have experienced this kind of thing before!? Just put in the email before you add your attachments 'Created in Open Office www.openoffice.org'

You should also head over to the http://www.oooforum.org/ and mention your problems, you never know there maybe a fix already.

It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.
  • If there is no need to edit the file you could convert it to PDF.

So let me get this right...

    1) Update OpenOffice which isn't going to make a jot of difference as it will still have formatting issues. OOo is NOT 100% Office compatible.
    2) Tell the tutors WHO DO NOT PAY FOR MS OFFICE that they have to change their software? Yeah like that's going to happen.

You've obviously not worked in a corporate environment have you, ABH? If you had, you'd know that organisations and companies have IT policies in place specifying what can and cannot be used and you either adhere to them or get left out.

This is not a bad idea thanks

Edited out comments that weren't fair to the Original Poster. I was being trolled by Conor but didn't spot that untill it was too late.

  • OP, I'm one of those people who found Open Office fine for standard/simple documents, but a nightmare for opening & editing documents created in Word with lots of complex formatting eg differently-sized tables & screenshots. I then tried creating my document using OpenOffice & asking people to install it as it was free. While they appreciated the fact it was free, they didn't want to install something (especially such a large download) that they'd hardly use just for my benefit. They 'suggested' that if I wanted my documents read I should install the software that most people are going to be using so that it's easier for them to do so.

You could try AbiWord - it's under 6.2mb so is much smaller than Open Office, has several plugins & a decent manual available & is freeware. It has been known to have some of the same issues as Open Office, but at least it's a smaller program to test. Or you could convert to .pdf as suggested earlier. I'm studying with the OU, & StarOffice was recommended to us if we didn't already have MS Office, so you could give that a go - it's supposed to be 100% compatible with MS Office. Version 8 about £35, but you may well be able to get version 7 cheaper or even free.

However, if you're going to be using it a lot, especially for detailed documents, I'd just invest in buying MS Office if you're entitled to the discounted package. I was able to get it at the reduced price, & I found it easier & safer to do that than get used to another package not many people I knew used that might have bugs I don't know about for the person receiving it. As someone doing a lot of typed work, including work I hope to get published, I can't afford complaints or risk my work being ignored. :)

It sounds to me as though you're an MS Office 'fan boy' out to make a point, you could for instance visit the forum I sugested and see if there is anyone in a similar position to yourself and who knows, there maybe an answer out there for you.

    Yeah, course I am. Meanwhile.....

No need for the attitude, you asked for possible solutions. That's what I provided, you didn't pay for anything I wrote, so I don't see why you're so angry. You up aginst a deadline or something? Too much time in the student union ;) Personally, I liked the idea in the post below mine. Use .pdf.

In your original post you hinted you were sending via email to your tutor, nothing about it being a corporate environment, if it was relevant then surely someone with your intellect would have included such a relevant detail? Or do you corporate student types rely upon telepathy and mind reading as a method of communication for when email is down?

Obviously going to University doesn't require intelligence if you managed to get in as you can't even work out the person who you're replying to isn't the original poster.

And graduates wonder why businesses don't think their degrees are worth a toss when we have such wonderful examples of intelligence such as ABH has displayed.

That's a very valid point, and to the Original Poster I obviously offer an appology.

Obviously, I deserve that. However it does raise the question as to why Conor you entered a thread and started pointing out network policies and corporate environments when you weren't in anyway associated with the OP's original question!? If you can't help, you shouldn't be in here.
