I am looking to purchase a cheap used/refurbished smartphone off the internet probably through e Bay. They state it is unlocked and not on any provider. I want it as a second phone on a pay as you go basis. I will need a new phone number together with a small top of say £20 on the phone to use as an emergency. How easy will this be to achieve and what will a new phone number cost.I want to keep my current mobile so I don't want to allocated this phone to my new phone. Any advise will be appreciated

Suggest you look at either O2 Classic PAYG or Three's 321 PAYG.
Both are same price and only need one chargeable event every 6 months.
Which network is your current phone on as this may determine which network gives the coverage you require?
You could always get both sims and see which one gives better coverage.0 -
As above, just get a PAYG sim, top it up (but don't buy a 'monthly' bundle) With most providers, you'll need to make a chargeable call or text every few months to keep the number live.
My OH has made a £10 top up with 3 last for nearly three years .....!0 -
Just get a sim from the best network and a phone.
Have you considered Amazon for refurb phones ?
I like the fact if your not happy with the phone you can easily return it.
I hope the phone you have seen is from a reputable seller, what's the seller OP ?0 -
you can order free sims online from the main providers.0
