Can anyone help regarding tv and broadband please

Options
Hi

This is going to sound really stupid so forgive me. I can’t get my head round all the TV/line rental/broadband stuff.

I currently pay £58 a month to virgin for tv broadband and I assume line rental.

I don’t use a home phone, don’t even own one. I don’t watch live tv, only watch through apps like Netflix and iPlayer and itv hub etc.

I am trying to reduce my bills but not sure what the cheapest option is.

Can I get broadband only? I’ve seen BT do fibre optic broadband for £28 a month - do you have to pay line rental on top as well? If I then get a now tv box or something to watch tv through the internet does that have rental or monthly costs or is it one off? Can I use an old x box to watch tv through the internet? Would Apple TV be the cheapest one off cost with then no monthly costs?! Help! I don’t get it and just need the cheapest option possible.

Thank you for sticking with this :)

Any advice appreciated

  • For the record I have read as much as I can online and stood looking at now tv and Apple TV boxes in shops and still don’t understand how they work in terms of one off/monthly ongoing costs

If you don't need Virgin's TV service, then you can cancel it and reduce your cost, but check that you are out of any contracted period. While you can get broadband only, there is very little difference between their broadband and broadband/phone packages, as you still need a line to bring the broadband to your premises.
Broadband and a smart TV will be adequate for you, from what you say. The entry level service at 50Mbps download will be more than enough to run a smart TV (or a TV with a box such as Now TV) on. With Virgin you do tend to get the advertised speed.
What it will cost you depends on your area, but as you already have Virgin, you could probably get their M100 broadband and phone line for something like £27 a month, including line rental. Contact Virgin and see what they offer you - select the "thinking of leaving" option, or whatever they call it now.
Only other cost will be any services you subscribe to, such as Netflix, or if you purchase a Now TV box, any of their services you take up.

BT prices include line rental .
Line rental is not for phones its rental of the data line that transmuits your BB or phone data .

Aim for £10 per month for standard broadband and £20 for fibre then just sign up to now or netflix as and when.

NowTV is a good option for broadband. £25/month ish

I'm sure there are cheaper ways than apple TV to get netflicks.
There are at least 3 TV sticks on the market offering TV on demand
    What they provide differs

    amazon, nowtv, and google chrome?
