Paying too much for Electric & Gas

How do we work out if we are paying too much for our gas and electric with SSE?

We are paying £99 per month for electric and £67 for gas (and that's with an employee discount) for two adults in a 3 bed house. We are out at work all day except for weekends - is this reasonable or should be review?

Any hints/tips welcome

How often do you read your meters and give the readings to your supplier ?

What tariff are you on? What is your annual consumption in kwh ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • Are you repaying any arrears (as well as the questions above). Electric storage heaters or gas central heating? Energy saving light bulbs, old appliances?

I'm with SSE. There's 2 of us in a 2 bed house, we work from home so there's a laptop/computer/TV on all the time, I'm on a fixed tariff which is £36 a month gas, £53 a month electricity.

We supply meter readings each time we are asked and all bills are based on actual readings, rather than estimated (been asked for one today, which has prompted the post).

For electric we are on a 2 year fixed tariff, unit rate 15.72p per kWh with an estimated annual consumption of 6,108.02kWh.
Gas we are on the same 2 year fixed tariff, unit rate 3.66p per kWh with estimated annual consumption of 18,934.21kWh

Just wondered if this is about right for monthly expenditure or whether we need to question.

OMG!!! We have no arrears and use gas central heating and have energy saving bulbs in all rooms. Appliances range from 7 years to new.

Your estimated consumptions are fantastically high - about double the average for elec and gas.

Can you dig out an old bill with ACTUAL readings on it (look for the letter A) and read the meters NOW. Give us the readings.

PS Don't think much of your special employee rates

I used to be with SSE until they gave me a set of equally silly predicted consumptions.

Are in actually in credit ?

You really need to get actual consumption figure. Those seem to be very high and you appear to be on quite an expensive tariff.

You should be reading your meter yourself without prompting from the energy company. Try reading the meters daily for a couple of week to establish what is using it all. Waiting for for the bill to come in doesn't help you control your consumption, if you dont monitor it yourself then you cant control it
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

Yes we are in credit - will try to dig out on old bill and monitor usage for a week to see what is being used. Thanks everyone for their replies
