Damaged Induction Hob

Hi iv'e just bought a set of Tefal Inginio Pans to go with my new Stoves Induction Hob from Ideal World ....Upon using the first pan i found it left a large scratch in the glass of the hob :o( When i checked the bottom of the pan i found it had a piece of metal sticking up like a burr on the base so i wrote an email to the customer services with supporting pictures of the scratch and the offending pan complaining about the damage it had caused and they rang me the next day. The said i could have a full refund if I return the whole set or they could give me 10% discount if i kept them....
They said they can't compensate me or arrange repair of the damage to the hob

Could someone please advise me of my rights or route of action plz

Many thanks Dave

You are entitled to replacement pans / or discount.
I think you might struggle re the hob as they will try and argue that you failed in your duty of care to inspect the pans before use.

I suspect sadly that if the handle suddenly snapped off, the pan dropped and fell on the hob whilst in use and damaged the hob, your case would be stronger because you would not have been able to necessarily pre plan for this in advance. (Not a legal expert)

Is the scratch to the hob deep or cosmetic? Are you in a rental property? You might be able to try and argue the hob would cost £x to repair / you woukd be charged £y by your landlord for unreasonable wear and tear but if cosmetic they may argue fair wear and tear.

They aren't under any obligation to replace, although there is a right to a replacement it can not be insisted upon if it is impossible or is disproportionate compared to other remedies.

There are rights to a price reduction but from my understanding it's not a straightforward right:

    Full details here:

OP I would send them the pans back and get a refund (they should collect them judging by what it says on their website) unless you are happy with the 10% refund.

Regarding the hob, look online for advice about buffing out scratches. If it's too deep I have no idea if you can hire someone to repair professionally

If you can't buff it out but can pay to have it fixed, get a price and send them a letter before action for the cost, if you wish to pursue them for any costs of repair take some photos of the offending pan before you return.

They will of course tell you they can't pay for the damage but I don't think the average person would be checking the bottom of pans for pointy bits that might scratch the hob.

Would have thought it would be quite obvious when you washed and dried the pans before use.
