I booked a caravan holiday through an advert on gum tree, after travelling for 7 hrs, 2 kids an a dog tried to book in an found out it didn't exist, just to mention I did this last year and there was no problems, rzng the bank and they said couldn't refund as we had authorised the payment (bank transfer), my bank contacted the other bank (monzo) on our behalf to try an refund the money but said nothing could be done, there were checks we made after sending the deposit ie phoneing the caravan park, we received a letter from my bank saying there was nothing they could do as we didn't do sufficient checks can anyone give any help/advise as to whether there is anything else I could do , tia

What did the caravan park say when you rang to check? If they had no idea what you were talking about, why did you drive seven hours to stay there? If they acknowledged your reservation, your quarrel is with them if they didn't provide it.Spencer123 wrote: »I booked a caravan holiday through an advert on gum tree, after travelling for 7 hrs, 2 kids an a dog tried to book in an found out it didn't exist, just to mention I did this last year and there was no problems, rzng the bank and they said couldn't refund as we had authorised the payment (bank transfer), my bank contacted the other bank (monzo) on our behalf to try an refund the money but said nothing could be done, there were checks we made after sending the deposit ie phoneing the caravan park, we received a letter from my bank saying there was nothing they could do as we didn't do sufficient checks can anyone give any help/advise as to whether there is anything else I could do , tia
Who exactly did you pay for this holiday? The caravan park or some random person on gumtree?0 -
After paying the deposit I rang the caravan park to check ,they informed me that the park is , 80% owner occupied and that the owners do advertise on other sites so I asked to check the name I had and they replied with cannot discuss names of who owned caravans cannot give any personal details over the phone they then said if you have a receipt for the booking you will be fine, I was emailing an texting the person who we booked it through and they give me receipts for deposit and for the whole booking looked genuine texting the day before when we would arrive letting us know how to get the keys etc didn't think anything of it has we had done the same thing the year before in wales and it was fine , when we tried to book in showed all receipts booking confirmation emails txt etc and they couldn't find anything I think we actually spoke to the lady who Id actually rang previous weeks before to originally check because she gave us a massive discount on another caravan think she remembered the conversation.......and it was through gum tree but as earlier stated we have done this before and been no problem just unfortunate that there is people out there who do this and looking back I will never do this again frustrating that I fell for it but we have done this before and been no problems , looking for advise to how and if I can get my money back tia0

Unless to have a name and address the moneys gone.0 -
Sorry but IMO you stand no chance of getting your money back. Paying by Bank transfer is the worst thing anyone can do as you have no protection when/if things go wrong
I would only ever use Credit/Debit cards to have the protection from the CC company {section 75} or the bank with charge back0 -
Bank transfer is the same as handing over cash, so you're out of luck there.
Only option would be to take the scammer to court, but that's of course not very simple.0 -
Report to (in)Action Fraud. This is a new take on the classic Villa Fraud and Ski Chalet Fraud that's been around for as long as t'interweb. The money's gone. Write it off.0

I presume they stopped answering on the day your holiday was due to start? Have you googled the phone and account number to see if they're still advertising anywhere? You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0
