Cantilever Carport

Hi all,
I am looking at putting a car port on the side of my house, however I am limited by space (width) as the driveway which runs up the side is just 2.5m wide, and putting uprights in would lessen car space.
My thought is to use a cantilever design that is attached to the house wall without uprights. Sounds good but I am a little concerned about the load on the house wall, especially if snow falls and sits on it. Is there any concern or risk the wall could be pulled down in this instance?
Any other ideas that could be used?
Any builders / engineers please feel free to proved feedback!
Many thanks...

Many years ago I worked as a trainee structural engineer... I don't think we would have considered a cantilevered structure off the side of the house because of the reasons you state.
We would probably have looked into some chunky foundations with vertical steels in, and then new steel cantilevered from the new steel. But - assuming the vertical steel would be next to your wall I suspect by the time you factor in that the new foundations would have to be next to the existing foundations (typically up to 10-15cm) beyond the wall you can see and that the vertical steel would have to be away from the edge of the new foundation you'd end up with less space. The foundations would have to be significantly bigger than normal too, adding to the cost. If you had the vertical steel on the side of the drive away from your house and your neighbours have e.g. a drive there rather than their wall they might let you put the concrete foundation partly on their property so the vertical steel is on the edge of your drive.0 -
I think the highest load case would likely be drifting snow filling the roof/wall in a triangular shape. Maybe if you made the roof slope to whatever the snow angle is, you could just get the design done for normal same depth snow load which might help. You'd need extra height though.
Don't forget to do something to allow for water run-off though, you'll likely need/want something to get the water tidily off the edge of the roof.0 -

Narrow oblong uprights rather than square might help.0

Do not even consider it, unless you want to build the structure something like Kfletcher describes and pay the fees for a structural engineer to design it and justify it Building Control's satisfaction.0

Cars fit through (into) gaps much narrower than needed to then open the doors in. Uprights don't have to be particulary thick and if spaced away from the centre will not get in the way of door opening so I can't see them being a make or break issue for functionality.0 -
Thanks for all your replies, I've been busy debating and wondering which way to go (still not sure!). In that exampl of the collapsed wall, it looks like the top part of the bulding came down, the cagle side which is a weak point on buildings. I guess because they atatched this to a one storey extension. In my case it's a two storey building, and would have the wall tied in etc, should be much stornger...
Still deabting, cantivelr is the next coice for room, but I think posts better to avoid any risk, alebit a small risk in my case I think.
Anyone on here axctually got one of these cantilever jobbies?Mortgage Free Wannabe Light Bulb Moment (Early 2012, started May 2012)
