Can anyone take out buildings insurance

Need advice. It is my understanding that only the owner of a property can take out buildings insurance? I own my house, no mortgage and i hold it as freehold.
I pay a service charge to a property building company who own the shared courtyard which i use in common with 3 other properties. They do not own my house. They have insured my house in said insurance as buildings together with the usual cover for electric gates, fencing etc. I asked them why they have done this as i have my own buildings/contents on my house. This is their reply:
. I have contacted the insurer Aviva who has confirmed that this is not the case. Anyone can insure a building. Where a building is insured twice, the insurer has indicated that, in the case of a claim, the insurers would most likely split the pay-out (I appreciate this still doesn’t make it cost effective to be insured twice!)
I contacted Aviva, who said i needed to talk to the broker who acted on behalf of the property company. The broker will not talk to me as i am not the policyholder but said the property company can do it as they have an insurable interest in my house but won't tell me what the insurable interest is. And also what concerns me is if i cancel my own buildings insurance and in the future have to make a claim, how do you do it if you are not the named policyholder .
