Is this receiving PIP in own right?

Options
I am asking as I am considering application for school bursary
My child is in sixth form and is eligible for the bursary "if claiming PIP in their own right"
My child has an appointee.
We receive the disability element of child tax credit.
I am just confused what "in their own right" actually means.

Thank you.

Do they have a claim for PIP?
  • Yes my 16 year receives PIP but father is the appointee
  • Usually to be in the highest category for school bursaries the student needs to be in receipt of PIP (with or without an appointee) AND be receiving ESA in their own right - not be on a Child Tax Credit award notice.

Priority category two is then usually receives free school meals/Pupil Premium.

Agree with post #4 a benefit in their own right would be ESA or UC for bursaries. PIP isn't classed as a benefit in their own right that would qualify for the bursary.
