I have both a Chromecast and a Fire TV stick. I agree about the inconvenience of driving the Chromecast from a phone or tablet and that some apps don't support it.

However I feel the Chromecast is significantly higher quality.

We got a Panasonic Viera TV from Richer Sounds but I suspect it was an end of line model as Panasonic soon stopped supporting the apps for catchup TV. Now its 'not so smart' and we have to watch catchup on a laptop.

Why not attach a Smart Box? Roku for instance; https://channelstore.roku.com/en-gb/browse/film-and-tv

Can probably buy a box from £15.
