  • I had the same situation when I started university. Student loan was no where near enough to pay rent, let alone other outgoings like food and textbooks.

    You can easily get a retail job; they are reasonably flexible with hours, and you do not need experience in most circumstances. My parents contributed slightly, but as I am working hard at work I am quite well-off, and can even afford a car and nice meals out etc...

    Unfortunately, it can be frustrating when other students do not work, and have all the time to focus on study and partying, because their parents pay for everything. It will make you a more resilient person in the long run, and helps to teach you to defend for yourself...
