Grant overpayment letter from student finance

Options
Hello,

I've tried doing some research and not been able to find much about people who have been in similar situations, so I'm just curious if anyone else has had this issue?

I received a letter from student finance today stating that when I got my loan for my university academic year for the 2015/16 term, I was overpaid by nearly £2000. The letter states that at the time I was sent a letter to be notified of this however I've gone back on to my old student finance account where you can see all correspondence sent and there is nothing there regarding a grant overpayment. There is no reason within the letter why I was overpaid, just the figure and a number to call to pay it off. I was also at uni for another term after that and received the exact same grant and apparently this was not over paid as I've had no letter about this?

Has anybody else had a situation like this with student finance at least a year after they have graduated and a few years after the year in question?

  • I think your only option is to call the SLC helpline and ask for an explanation of how the overpayment came about. Make sure you know whether it's a grant or loan overpayment when you call up, and try to remember if you suspended studies during the applicable year, or if your parents weren't asked to provide documentation to confirm the earnings they declared on that year's application (if your application was supported by parents at the time, of course). There are lots of reasons that might have caused an overpayment, these are just 2 examples.

I had a NHS bursary overpayment when I was on mat leave and even though I was sure I wasnt actually overpaid I still had to pay it back via an arrangement as they threatened with courts etc. Paid that for years after finishing uni.

Just make an arrangement to pay.
