Not sure what the issue is here:

    1) Lying cheating scumbags
    2) Blokes who take the mick out of women re pricing

I've always found that when I try to get things done for car/house I am quoted many silly, silly prices. If you've no choice sometimes you just have to cough up and get it done. But it's annoying having to find the time to get 4-6 opinions to work out what the problem really is and how much.
  • Thanks for your replies,

You read and hear about garages that are corrupt and apparently according to reports women on the whole have more of a chance of being ripped off then men. I guess I was angry and my OP was a chance to have a rant. My depth of car mechanics is just weekly checks of oil, tyres, connections etc and of course brake fluid that's why when he said it had leaked all over my pads I knew something wasn't right, hence the second opinion.

So good people not only be aware of kwikfit, also add Supafit to the list.

    Absolutely!!! :T

My dad never let the fact I was a girl get in the way. At 3 I was making concrete, at 10 I could change spark plugs, oil, wheels, and I knew where all the different fluids went. At 13 I changed my first brake pads (supervised!).

It's such a benefit. I cannot thank my daddy enough for that. :D

:D How you fixed next weekend to knock me up a quick extension to the kitchen and service the car ? I can make the tea :j

    Happy Chappy - any time!

I am at the moment 40, female, ex-civil engineer - and having a break from my tools in the garage as I am knocking up some raised beds for the garden; whilst the OH is preparing to do the ironing [and just waiting for him to make a brew].

Just a note on the other side of things.

I went for a free check at Nationwide AutoCentres. They spent an hour or so with the car, and when I went back they told me everything was fine and there was no problems. Slight oil leak he said, but no need to worry about that.

Some "quick" garages are bad - but not all of them.

The bad ones spoil it for the good ones then as the chances of me going to one of these places now is pretty much zero after reading everyone else's experiences with them.

The industry really should have some sort of scheme to prevent this sort of thing going on. It would be in their own interests to ensure they don't rip off people and give themselves a bad name.

The problem is, in a lot of these places they earn a large bonus on any work they bring in.

The bigger your bill the more they earn.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

I see some things never change...

I took my car into a national chain of garages to have a free brake check as the brakes had began to squeal, I received a call an hour later saying that one of the wheel cylinders had leaked and I now need new cylinders, new shoes & pads, brake clean and brake fluid change all which can be done for the bargain price of £230!!! Oh and to to make sure I didn't leave the garage they advised me that a person had come in the week before with the exact same thing and they had driven off and crashed their car at the end of the road...

I'll be getting a 2nd opinion this week and I really hope they aren't right!!

I'm guessing the only thing you can do is write a review on a few websites. I like to search for reviews before I go to a garage so it would definitely be of use to some people. Just name and shame them on a few review sites. Anyone got any good links?

edit-lol. I replied to the OP not realising this post was 3 years old! Stokegal, how the hell did you find this to resurrect it?
