Becoming Disabled with a mortgage

Hi all.
I’ve never had to claim benefits before but it’s on the horizon and I find it awfully confusing. I’m an ex soldier and due to related issues I have found it increasingly difficult to function in the work place.
I have been assessed and it looks like I am going to be going down the disability route, which is ok and maybe the best thing for me.
I’m not rich by any means, but my wage has afforded me a comfortable life, I have a mortgage, car payments and one credit card along with my two children.
My problem is, I have done the disability calculator and the monthly amount comes up £500 short of my outgoings, before I buy a loaf of bread.
My question I suppose is, how am I going to live? Is £263 a week considered enough to live off? Or am I able to write loans or get help with my mortgage off due to my condition?
I have been holding off on sending off the relevant forms with my doctors opinion because I’m scared I will be homeless after my savings are gone in a month.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

To claim SMI you will need to claim Universal Credit and you would only be eligible for SMI after 9 assessment periods of zero income. You would need to speak to your mortgage company regarding future payments, if you you get into difficultly paying.
Claiming UC also depends on circumstances, such as household income, savings and capital.
If you're claiming tax credits, once you apply for UC the tax credits will stop and be transferred to UC.

Do you have any mortgage protection or critical illness insurance? Sometimes people do forget they have this.
As an ex serviceman you may be able to get advice from the British Royal Legion https://www.britishlegion.org.uk/get-support/financial-and-employment-support/financeInformation I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.0
