Changing credit card direct debit

Could one of the knowledgeable folk on here give me some advice.

I have a direct debit set up for one of my credit cards to pay the minimum balance.
Now the card is clear, i would like to change the direct debit to pay off the full balance instead.

(I only intend to use it for an occasional small purchase just to keep the card active)

Is it possible to simply change the direct debit instruction, or would I have to cancel the original and set up a new one?

All help much appreciated.

You should be able to log on to your online portal and select Full Balance by DD as a payment option.

Edit: Just checked this and I'm only partially correct. For one of my cards you can only amend the DD by sending a secure message (and I assume it can be done by phone too)

    Depends on the card provider.
You maybe able to do it via online/app to switch from min to full. Or you could simply ring them and they would be able to do it over the phone.

Doe's it make any difference that it is a bank issued credit card but the direct debit is paid from a different banks current account?
  • No that makes no difference at all.

Some banks allow you to change the DD online and some you’ll need to phone and make the change.

    Thanks folks.
I called the CC company and their advice was that as the card currently has a balance of zero, the easiest was to just cancel the direct debit and then set up a new one before I use the card again.
A bit of a cop out from them, but to be honest, no real problem for me.

I’m not sure their advice to cancel the old DD before setting up the new one is the best - the better approach is usually to just send in the new instruction which should overwrite the old one.

That way if there is a need for a payment to be made there should always be one in place. (Although in this case there’s no balance so wouldn’t cause a major issue).
