Hi guys,
I'm new to any type of investment but am looking to begin learning more, particularly funds.
What would be the number one piece of advice you could share if you were starting today?
Any must read books, magazine, articles, etc?
I'm 37 years old running my own business (no kids). I have expendable income that simply sits in my current account month after month. It's time to change that :-)
Any help is super appreciated!

Diversify your portfolio as broadly as possible. As what matters is an overall incremental net gain.0

“What would be the number one piece of advice you could share if you were starting today?”
Start off with a (passive) broad-based tracker fund and take a long term view. If you will feel spooked by your investments having dropped in value in a year’s time, then this investment thing is probably not for you.
Must read website (apart from this one of course!): Monevator.

Read these two books:
DIY Simple Investing: A Guide to Simple but Effective Low Cost Investing by John Edwards
Investing Demtystified by Lars Kroijer0 -
Another good book is 'Smarter Investing' by Tim Hale.0

Do you have a pension?0 -
Are you a limited company? How much cash have you saved outside your company? Do you won your own home?
I agree with t he above, you need a pension if you dont already have one. But the investment advice above about diversification and low costs is still valid. You could look at Vanguard Lifestrategy or a global tracker.0 -
I've signed up for a 5 week evening course on Intelligent Investing at my local university. Maybe similar near you?0

The intelligent investor, One up on wall street and Common sense on MF is my favorites.0 -
Don't invest outside your risk profile.
Monevator articles are easily understandable for new investors.
Diversify both in terms of geographies, sectors and asset types.
Don't invest more than you feel comfortable with and consider other things like overpaying a mortgage, getting rid of unsecured debt and investing in your pension.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free Wannabe, Budgeting and Banking and Savings and Investment boards.
