Hi folks,
I have heard a lot about VR these past few years, would like to experience what its all about, and since this is a moneysaving site I do mean dirt cheap!
So in all likelihood it will be a cheap headset with my moto G4 which is a fairly big phone, but could borrow my partners Samsung which is a lot smaller.
I visited poundland today and they were selling phone VR headsets for a few pound I believe by a company called Smart theatre.
I didn't buy it as I probably thought it can't be any good, so what I am looking for is a headset with the ability to get as many free apps as possible.
Many thanks for any pointers in the right direction.

there is 3d film, and then there is vr.
3d film uses the cardboard box (or plastic) with a cell phone in it. A mobile with high resolution is preferred like samsung. Personally have tried it, and was ok to a point, but as things got very close it was not a great experience. I gave the headset back to my friend, and he was not overly impressed with it either, now less impressed that he could not even give it away
Vr, you sit or turn etc well so does the picture you are watching. The words very expensive come to mind. Think you should go to an arcade where they have these and the platform to stand on. Experience this there and then decide how far down the path you want to go, or if it is for you0 -
The cheapest 'actual VR' system is the oculus Go at around £200
These are supposed to be quite good.
I have the Oculus quest, the next one up and it is pretty amazing.
It's stand-alone , so no PC or other equipment needed0 -
If you have a Samsung phone and want a quick cheap(ish) taster get the Samsung Gear VR.
Really impressed with it. Its not going to be anything close to the more costly units but as a taster its good. Paid £25 for mine.
No dodgy software to install helped me choose to get the Samsung unit over the cheaper market stall Chinese ones.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

The Go is very good - you link it to your smartphone to load the apps, but you dont need the phone to use it
The £5 card board VR's use your smart phone as the screen, they do work but quite hard to control, The Samsung Gear has a seperate controller but with the matching headset (that uses the Samsung phone as the screen) is over £100.
If you have a Playstation 4 you can get a VR headset for this which has extra sensors so you get forward and back movement as well
And as usual the P*rn sites are really pushing this.0 -
Good VR can't be done cheaply.
The cheapest way is the Oculus Go headset, but that's less interactive than others. As others have said the PS4 does have a VR headset, if you already have a PS4 this is the cheapest way. HTC and Oculus Rift are more expensive.
Here's a rough guide:

Using a mobile phone holding headset is a good way to try VR. The quality of the experience depends on the quality of your screen. You need a 1080 (HD) screen minimum, but the more pixels the better.
You also need a phone with a gyroscope, otherwise it won't move around properly in sync with your head movements.
The limitation of the phone based VR is the controller. You want to buy a headset that has a built in button, the provide the minimum functionality.
Really you want a bluetooth controller to allow you more advanced control.
If you have a mobile phone that supports Google Daydream you can use the roper, full motion controller. I'm not sure if this controller can work with other phones.Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.0 -
As others said, if you have a PlayStation 4 then the VR for this is highly recommended.0
