12 years of benefits in deceased's account?

"There was no will, no probate, no other next of kin, no other relatives in the UK but he does have a copy of the death certificate."
So he went into the care system?
Someone at the council will have dealt with the death, so that's who you need to contact if you want any info.
If he is in touch with the bank, then as long as they have evidence that he is the next of kin (& has the right to the account contents) then he could ask for a statement.
It's not going to be benefits; a) they don't just keep paying them with no contact from the claimant, b) they will have known of the death
Yes, he went into care until the care home got closed down by the government and he's been on and off the streets/hostels since. I agree with many posts here that it seems unbelievable that multiple government agencies would keep paying over a decade later..0 -
Death occurred 12 years ago and there is £20K in a Bank account 12 years later ?
What are the Bank doing with a deceased account with £20k in so many years after the death ?
Does not sound correct.
Could it be some investment or pension that has been credited to a closed account ? What can happen is that a Bank account is closed and then years later when a credit is received, the account is automatically reopened. The money then sits in the account, until action is taken to find out who may be entitled to receive it.The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.0 -
Some banks leave dormant accounts open for 15 years. Presumably if they're sending statements they don't know the account holder has died.Death occurred 12 years ago and there is £20K in a Bank account 12 years later ?

Child benefit perhaps? That is a benefit that would be paid no problems and forgotten about if he never spent it from his birth 20k is possible.0

No, I checked and that went to his mum. Thanks for the suggestion.
He's going to get the statement and try to move forward.0 -
I agree its unlikely to be benefits, it sounds as if he could do with a windfall to make his life better, I hope it works out for him, poor fella.
If it is benefits and he was claiming DLA with an indefinite award its not beyond the realms of possibility that dad slipped through the net."You've been reading SOS when it's just your clock reading 5:05 "0
