I use Firefox - have done for years. Recently (last couple of weeks) it has started defaulting the search engine to Google (which I never use).

I go into tools/options and re-set the search engine to my preferred one and all is fine for a few days.

Then suddenly I do a seach and find google being used again..... Re-visit tools/options and see google is the default SE. Change it back and for a few days all is fine, till........ and so on.

Any ideas why this is happening?

This may be caused by an extension, some of them do change the search engine when they update.

I just have my preferred search engine (which is actually Google!) saved as a bookmark on my task-bar in Firefox
I rarely use the address bar to search.

I have an added search bar in the task bar, so also don't use the address bar.
  • I use Firefox with a default search engine of DuckDuckGo, as far as I know, it’s never changed. I would look at your various settings, it shouldn’t switch the default.

That's who I use too. Have done for years without a problem - this is recent.

Have checked Firefox settings but cannot see anything that would explain what's happeing. I suspect either a virus/malware, or another software package that is re-setting the default engine- though I've not downloaded any new software,
  • could be your software update too. whenever your firefox updates, it could be setting back the engine to google.
