My kids all loved pass the parcel. I would put a small sweet between each layer so everyone got something.
Bingo was also a hit (if all the children are numerate). Small sweets for a line, something bigger for a full house.
I would look in discount shops like poundland and homebargains for prizes.

Best game ever - 'first to count to a minute' (silently) wins a prize.

Make it longer if you want even more peace and quiet for longer :rotfl:

I remember them doing this when I was at Brownies. Only looking back later I realise how crafty they were and prob just wanted us to shut up for a while LOL.

Not games as such, but we did parties when mine were younger where they decorated biscuits (I made the biscuits in advance), made their own pizza (I had pre made bases, they put the sauce on, then chose from toppings I had put in the middle. Then they decorated money boxes, bought from baker Ross, which formed part of their party bag.

My girls love things like little novelty rubbers, mini notepads, tiny 'squishies', bouncy balls etc. Throw in a few packets of sweets to the prize tub and let them choose their own prize. You can get most of that from the supermarket party bag section or pound shops.

Games-wise, pass the parcel, musical statues/bumps, pin the tail on the donkey/unicorn/lizard/whatever she likes, let them look at a tray of random things for 30 seconds then cover them and they have to remember them all and crafts always go down well (get spares for the kids who are quick!).
  • You can't beat the fun of the "bar of chocolate game".
Players have to roll a 6 on a dice, then as quickly as possible, whilst the other players continue to take turns in rolling the dice, put on a hat, scarf and gloves and then use a knife and fork to cut up and eat a bar of chocolate, before the next 6 is rolled, and the next player is in the "chocolate attack seat"

Players have to eat a sugary doughnut, suspended on a string, without licking their lips (one doughnut each, not a shared one!)

A good ice-breaker when guests arrive is for each to be handed the end of a piece of coloured wool, which has been wound and tangled and threaded around furniture, door handles, the other pieces of wool, etc, until they reach the small prize at the end.

The memory games can be fun too - a set amount of time to memorise the items on a tray. The tray is then removed and either the children have to write down everything that was on the tray, or alternatively, two or three items are removed, the tray brought back and they have to say what items are gone.

Places like Smiggle, Hawkins Bazaar (are they still around?) and of course, Ebay, are great for little prizes for games and party-bag fillers.

My daughter's tenth birthday party (21 years ago ), which was full of "old fashioned" party games, was voted "best party ever". I think even the kids were sick of McDonalds parties, which were the big "thing" at the time :D

Similar idea - "sleeping lions". Children lie as still and quiet as possible, the one who can do it for the longest wins! Useful game for calming things down if it gets too exciting.
