Moving car from Marseille to the UK

Hope this is posted in an appropriate place.

Can anyone offer advice on the best and cheapest way to bring a car from Marseille to Manchester. Is driving it myself the cheapest option or are there better and cheaper ways? I have found a few sites that mention the motorail in france which take the car from Marseille to Paris and talk about saving having to pay the tolls but the total price for a return is over £1000!!! the tolls are only 90 each way. + about 300 for fuel.

So far the option is drive to calais, then a ferry then drive up to Manchester

Anyone offer any better ways?

I am only coming home for 2 weeks and need to return back to Marseille the same way.

Many thanks

You can avoid the tolls if you want to. It will take a bit longer and may use a bit more fuel though.

If it is going to cost you around £800 for the return trip, it would probably be cheaper to fly/train/coach and hire a car in Manchester for the fortnight.
  • I need to bring quite a bit of stuff back with me so need my car, unfortunately :(
  • I'd drive it on the motorways, much better than ours. Stop the first day in northern france in the many cheapish motels [30-40 euros] and make sure you're well east of paris. The shuttle the next day and m25 west,m40,m6, I do that route a couple of times a year, about the only conjestion around heathrow.

How about sending your stuff back to France with a carrier? You can send 20kg boxes 50cm cube for under £20 a piece. Send them off on your last day in England to receive a few days later when you have returned.

If there are just a few boxes worth you could travel by train or plane if you can get cheapish trips and leave the car at home.

From Marseille I would drive to Zeebrugge and get the overnight ferry to Hull. Zeebrugge is only 30mins / 50kms further than the drive to Calais, and you avoid having to drive around London and Birmingham.

I'd agree with that, but OP wants cheapest, I think ferry will cost a fair bit more than the fuel saving, but you do have a bed overnight.

The cheapest way is to walk, making several trips so as to be able to carry all the stuff, but this is too slow and arduous.

The quickest way is to hire an Mi-26, but this is too expensive.

The best way is always going to be a compromise!
