I would also strongly suggest getting a full buildings survey. We were in the process of buying a Victorian house which looked great. Fully brand new inside, and all new electrics and boiler.

Our surveyor picked up so many serious issues with the house, which the vendor has covered up with the interior decor. He also picked up that there was collapsed chimney stack and there was a massive (like, can touch the house on the other side massive) crack in the loft wall, which the vendor had covered up with a strategically placed piece of wood.

We are so glad we paid the £640 to get that survey. That house would have bankrupted us!
