  • , and I'd rather avoid Revolut's hidden fees..

Slightly confused on this point I've had a Revolut for over 4 years and no hidden fees, they make it very clear if you take out more than 200 GBP a month is 0.5% and you can use upto 5000GBP in card transactions before the 0.5% fee. Unless you want to pay for the upgrade in cards then you get more.
Thanks to money saving tips and debt repayments/becoming debt free I have been able to work and travel for the last 4 years visiting 12 countries and working within 3 of them. Currently living and working in Canada

Thank you everyone. I will be backpacking through Latin America, and I am also thinking of going to Israel, India, and Egypt.

Cash is king in India. Not sure about the other countries though as never been.

Re the Halifax Clarity card, have recently got one for my upcoming Barcelona holiday. I usually take Euro's and some £'s and my debit card as back up, but last year came a cropper with charges hence why I got the Clarity. Do I still get the same amount of Euro's I normally would or less and pay mostly with the Clarity? Just looking for the best way to use it as I don't really use credit cards and only got it for holidays abroad.

Agree, do a bit of research into the countries you're visiting. When I sent a colleague to India there was currency shortage, it was really hard to exchange money when he ran out. Double check to make sure there are no cash shortages in the places you visit.

Latin America - depends on which country, but definitely keep some cash on you.

I would suggest exchanging a small amount of cash at least for the countries you plan on visiting.

I would suggest taking multiple cards. Your credit card would be good for withdrawing cash (as long as you pay it off straight away to avoid interest), or buying things in different currencies. A regular card for booking things in pounds (eg. hotels/hostels through UK based sites like expedia).

Take multiple forms of payment just in case a card gets blocked/lost

Now that you have a Clarity card, you use it for purchases whenever possible, and for obtaining cash when necessary from a local ATM. That's the purpose of having one, there's no longer any need to waste time and expense buying cash euros in UK (if that's what you mean).
