These are the only marker pen I use, and they last a good six years in perfect condition. They rub out less than pencil, my second favourite.

Best of all would be copper or lead strip, and hammer letters into it. Slow, very pricey.

    Thanks from me, too :D

Sharpies are great, but I've not had much success with them in the garden (not helped by the sheer quantity of rain here, lol, so I'll be getting some of those Dafty!

How about, as a price compromise, one of those labelling machines?:D

I've actually got carrier bags full of hardwood veneer off cuts from my joiner neighbour, originally for kindling but I've realised far too useful for that. If the pen you suggests works on wood that would seem a great solution.

Don't joke - I've got one - albeit 20 odd years ago for labelling cables. I suspect outdoors the adhesive on those labels would be rather disappointing to say the least

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?

The labels I have used for the brother printer have worked for 4 years outside as I label any permanent plants with them like Roses, clematis . I attached the label to the plant with garden wire

This marker pen is for plants. I got one of them two

Yes, we have a thermal printer which we used back before 2007 for all the nursery labelling. With the software, it cost well over £1k, but it made the 'essays' Dafty mentioned possible, all on a 140mm stick-in.

Unfortunately, the program is on floppy discs and the printer connects via an old parallel cable, so there would now be problems firing her up again.

Like NASA, we...um..... 'lost the technology.' :o

The MSE answer is, of course, the free pencil available from IKEA or Argos! :)

And it's around now when B&M reduce their labels to 10p a pack, or something like that. I know I relieved them of 500 two years ago.

Wilko and others will probably do similarly.

I can confirm, the glue is carp outdoors, the tape just curls off.

I suppose a dab of superglue or suchlike would help but a licked HB pencil sounds easier

We might not need to do so much labelling in the future. On a recent walk around the 'holding, I commented that I'd never successfully ID'd a tree we have growing at the end of an area of willows.

My son in law, whipped out his phone, held it up and then replied "It's an American Black Walnut...."

    "Ah..." :o
