advice needed

I am after any suggestions re my hair.
I am early 70's ( not sure that is relevant) and my hair is horrible. It feels like it is stuck to my head with an itchy scalp, looks dry but it's not, it is fine and soft but I feel like I always need to wash it. I have tried various shampoos and conditioners and its ok the first day of washing.
I don't really know what I'm asking to be fair, I do colour it but not very often

Sounds like you may have a dermatological condition: please have a chat with your family doctor or your regular pharmacist. Dermatology covers hair as well as skin BTW! Once you have a diagnosis we may be able to suggest other things that are safe alongside.

Aside from that read up on NHS and other trusted websites, check if you currently meet or exceed all of the healthy eating guidelines. Nutrition has a strong impact on the health and quality of our skin and hair, but very few of us meet the basic guidelines.

The guidelines are slightly different for perimenopausal and menopausal ladies compared with earlier life stages. A key one is at least two servings of oily fish each week and up to four servings. Oily fish include mackerel, sardines/ pilchards, herring, salmon and trout. Canned or hot-smoked are fine (except canned tuna) if you prefer those to fresh or frozen oily fish.

    HTH! :)

  • Yes, go to your GP and get checked out.

But you could be overwashing your hair and stripping the scalp which makes it produce more oil. It is alike a vicious circle wash then the scalp produces more and more oil so you wash to try to stop that. Try using shampoos with no SLS as a foaming agent as it can dry the scalp out as well.

Thank you both for your replies.
I don't like fish at all but I will eat tinned pilchards, but I have started to take fish oil capsules. I do have an underactive thyroid but my blood tests are fine so I can rule that out.
I try and not wash my hair for about 3 to 4 days so I think I do need to see the doctor. I washed my hair yesterday afternoon and I now have an itchy head, no dandruff or anything else in my hair lol
I will make an app and see what they say,
    thanks x

    UPDATE
I went to the doctors this morning and he was totally disinterested. Had a quick look in my head and ears as they itch as well. Just said its probably some form of dermatitis and to use a medicated shampoo. Gave me my flu jab and that was it.

I too have had an itchy scalp for many years, along with psorasis.

After many years of using every kind of shampoo from coal tar to medicated, organic and even nizoral I recently found that Aveeno Soothing shampoo is really helping. It was a real find for me, I hope it helps you too.

Bless you, I did think it maybe some form of psoriasis as I did suffer years ago and then it cleared up. I like the Aveeno products so I will try the shampoo, thank you x

Have you changed anything recently? Washing powder, shampoo, or hair colour? May be a reaction. Not giving medical advice more an anecdote. My similar age M.I.L suffered with a similar ailment her son , my hubster researched and found TGel shampoo. Haven’t heard any bad hair news from her, so may be working.

Ears itching as well ? I will bet my last pound on it being Seb Derm

    Head and Shoulders should work

If not buy a bottle of Nizoral

Please consult your regular pharmacist about supplements if your family doctor is unhelpful. Fish oil capsules are only a partial replacement for oily fish nutritionally so you may still have an imbalance or insufficiency. Please try to have the pilchards regularly.

Your shampoo may well contain ingredients that are aggravating the dermatitis. Most commercial ones do. You might try diluting it well first OR washing your scalp with just conditioner**** OR a fragrance-free sulphate-free shampoo.

*** Conditioner contains legit skin cleansing ingredients, very similar to the ones in pharmacy skin cleansing creams used in eczema. No bubblicious suds are required to cleanse hair or skin.
