I have an account with HSBC and would like to use the cheque imaging part of the mobile app.
I installed it and have it run, but cannot seem to be able to understand how to use it properly.
Can anyone help?

I press move money, in the next window I select the account, write the amount of the cheque and then press front. The app launches the camera and I have a centered box where i need to place the cheque. At the centre of the square there is a smaller double red square (one inside another with an additional red dot at its center). I press it thinking it should snap the photo, but nothing happens.
I center the cheque and nothing happens I get the sentence 'keep flat over the check' (or something similar). I do but nothing happens. How can I actually force the photo snap?
The app seem to take the photo almost randomly (when there is a change of light or so it seems) and never gets a good picture. While when I have a good steady picture (on screen) it does not take any photo and waits forever.

Any hint on how to use this app?

  • You have to line the cheque up exactly right and make sure the lighting is correct otherwise it won’t take the photo.

Sorry, can't advise exactly how to do it as I don't have a cheque to deposit. But I do remember struggling with doing this on an HBOS account.

The camera had to be directly above the cheque, and the cheque had to be precisely within the box. Direct overhead lighting was best, and no shadows.

Does this video help? Although evidently HSBC has done a very good job in making something that ought to be very straightforward into something very complicated:

The lloyds bank one requests that you use a dark background on which you place the cheque.
I use an dark oak table to put the cheque on

The app takes the picture once it is happy with what the camera sees in the frame.

Follow the on screen instructions, when the app is happy the border will turn from red to green and an image will be taken.

You then will be asked whether to use that picture or take it again.
  • Its tricky, I find use the button to turn on flash on mobile helps. The problem I have most problems is taking a picture of the back of the cheque. It keeps complaining it couldn't read the text (back of cheque is blank). Normally takes 3 or 4 tries for back, and 1 or 2 tries for front. Using a black background helps.

It helps if you have a dark contrast behind the cheque. Also helpful is writing the date on the back of the cheque as it picks up better than just scanning a plain white image.
