So just before I fessed to my husband who’s credit rating is absolutely perfect

I explained to my husband what steps I am taking to deal with this debt (1) he and his finances/credit score will not be affected

Well done on the knowing you have to do something front. However not to put a downer on it. Yo uhave said you havea joint mortgage and a joint account. His credit worthiness is already trashed.

Unless of course you just look bad and not terrible right now. Of course if you go on a DMP it will be trashed.

Will probably take a removal of yourself from all joint finaces and maybe a letter of dissasociation.

If you do go for the DMP please remember early defaults are so much much much much much much better. I cannot stress that enough having been there. (fortunatly (if such a thing like that ver is!) my partner was in much the same situation but took an extra six months before we changed to a joint DMP).

Good luck though. But now you have the will to do something do it right and not avoid parts of it.

I didn’t want to read and run so I want to wish you well with this. Keep posting.

  • I’ve managed to keep all my debts away from our joint account. The only financial association myself and my husband have are a joint mortgage and current account. All the priority bills are completely up to date and my husband has a perfect credit score. So if I remove myself from the joint current account and I think the mortgage too given he wants to remortgage then fingers, toes and eyes crossed his credit rating won’t be affected.
  • So after a telephone appointment with business debt line I feel so much better and determined to proceed forwards budgeting carefully with gusto! They were very clear, informative and non judgmental. I’m awaiting an email from step change in two days max. First repayment to commence within the next two weeks. Great news. Should have done this YEARS ago! Incidentally I’m finding this year has been a massive turning point in my life, lots of adjustments and other things going on. It seems nearly approaching the big 40 is changing me in many many ways.

Glad that things are looking up.
Just take one day at a time and yes, it's tempting when you go out to want to buy, but one of the things I have had to learn" was to determine whether it was "a need" or "a want". Once you can decipher between the two, you have part of the battle of overspending down pat.
I started saving coins in a bottle, took them to the bank the other day and walked away with over 200+ pounds. Couple of years ago, this would not be something I would even contemplate doing. It just goes to show how debt can change your outlook on life.
Now I hardly ever spend money until it's really necessary.
Another thing I have always done is to buy quality clothes that last for year. Some of my clothes go back 20/30 years and they look brand new when worn.
I am not a shoes or bag person, so only have a couple pairs of good quality shoes and 2/3 handbags.
Your husband will come around, but it might take him quite a while to do so.
Remember right now people are dealing with a lot of uncertainty with Brexit and now we have Thomas Cook and no one knows who will will fall.
This is the time to tighten belts until this great uncertainty have passed and we know where the country is heading.
    Good luck
  • Thanks, some great tips I will have a go at.

It’s our wedding anniversary today, he has bought me a card every year, often accompanied with a gift but this year I don’t have a card. He saw mine this morning and said he’s just forgotten with everything that is going on. Can’t help but feel sad about that but it was to be expected I guess. Sigh
  • So after an initial call on Friday to chat to someone about sorting my debt via DMP I had a pre-arranged telephone call with Business Debtline yesterday. Today I received a very prompt and detailed email from Step Change with my report and what the next steps are to take. The ball has started moving very quickly and I should have a Direct Debit set up to make monthly payments to my DMP within the next 2 weeks. Step Change have made things so easy to take positive steps forwards. Feeling much more positive right now.

Sounds as though things are going in the right direction. :)
    I Believe.....
That it isn't always enough, to be forgiven by others.
Sometimes, you have to learn to forgive yourself.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery
Today is a gift. That's why it is called the present.

happiness isn't achieved by getting extra things,
but by getting rid of the things that make you unhappy
