Help mortgage application rejected

Options
Hi could somone advise me I had a car on finance 18 months ago never missed a payment. I terminated the contract paid the difference, had a out standing balance of #£500 Which I set up a dd. I thought it was paid gone to apply for mortgage and been rejected as I have 11 months of missed payments! I rang them up n they said they sent me a letter in June which I haven't received Even though my address was correct. But I honestly didn't know about this till now. I owe £250 which I will pay but then what next can I argue that they didn't notify me and have the defaults removed or will it be OK to have it 'setttled' then re apply after Xmas? Really upset as I genuinely didn't have a clue!!

C a n somone help please. Company is alphera finance

How did you know that the balance due was £500? Did receive notification of the £500 balance due in writing? Did you terminate the Direct Debit manually or did you just let the DD run?...

  • Was the DD cancelled?
If they can provide a copy of the letter then you have no ground really.
  • Hi thank you for your reply, no I've just let the direct debit run, it comes up on the credit report £457 then its like 2 miised payments a green for £457 then reds for 11 months for £257 so it looks like I owe £257. But I remeber I had to pay £500 in wear and tear charges.
They said they sent me a letter but I haven't had a thing through, just seen this tonight. :(
  • Do you know why the DD payments stopped being paid for the last 11 months? Did you have sufficient funds in your current account?

  • I'm not sure, the thing is I gave the car back 18 months ago so surely it should be showing longer?
I'm happy to pay the outstanding but if there anyway I can get it removed? I never missed a payment before and had good record with them.
If it goes as settled is that still going to impact me. I will have to go back through my bank statements from 2018.

I think you need to try and determine why each of the DD payments was missed by going through all your bank statements. To ascertain was it an error on your part (ie insufficient funds), or on the part of the creditor, or was it an error with your bank?

Also, just out of curiosity, how often do you check your bank statements for accuracy?

If the missed payments turn out to be your fault, then you would need to phone the creditor, apologising for your mistake, accepting the blame and ask for their goodwill in removing the negative markers.

  • Not very often! I am no embrassed to say this is a massive learning curve and I will be checking weekly to ensure this doesn't happen again!.
I will give them another ring tomorrow, as I say I've always had good history etc and I'm not sure why it hasn't gone through. On the credit report it says they took £457 then there were no payments.

Would you also do this in writing or via the phone.
