Tariffs when your energy company goes bust.

I was with One Select when it went bust and we were allocated to Together Energy without notice and without asking. They immediately increased our tarries for gas and electricity.
On the MSE tv programme on Monday evening Martin stated that the old company tariffs were honoured. Is this the case? Any one know the answer.

You don't need to be asked, it is enshrined in the Energy Acts that OFGEM can appoint a supplier of last resort to take over a failed supplier's customers. There is no requirement to be kept on the same tariff when a company goes bust, very few do and you will most likely be put onto one of the SOLR's existing tariffs. Was Martin talking about the takeover of SSE as that is a completely different situation and the existing contracts must be honoured.
  • At 44min 50 secs into programme ML definitely states if your energy company goes bust you should stay on your original tariff until the end of the fixed period.

should and must are two entirely different concepts'

When GB fell off the tree, Co-op energy did honour the contracts but when Octopus Energy took over from IRESA they cranked up the tariff by quite a hefty amount (about 3p or 4p/kwh if I remember rightly - that's why I jumped as soon as I could)

So I'm not sure what the legal position is

When OVO took over from Economy energy we were told not to switch supplier. I took a look at OVO's standard tariff, and thought, 'blow that, I'm switching'. :)

    It went fine.
