    ....

The meters and In Home Display connect to each other by WiFi and that signal is roughly the same strength in my living room as the Wifi signal from my TalkTalk router.

They don't use WiFi; they might be using similar frequencies but they're not WiFi devices.
  • OK, so it's not the same protocol as your internet WiFi, BUT it does use the same band !

Communication inside the home - the HAN
Inside the home, Smart Meters usually use wireless signals at 2.4 GHz, with a maximum power of less than 1 W.

My 2.4 Ghz TalkTalk WiFi and Smart Meter signals are both at -43 dBm in the middle of my home.

Nothing to stress about, but don't hold a mobile phone to your ear !

This has been covered on BBC Local Radio on consumer shows, there were a plethora of reports of people experiencing higher readings with no change in usage. Some of this was put down to the smart meters having trouble with LED light bulbs.

Why would smart meters "have trouble with LED bulbs" that causes higher readings? Smart meters don't use some radical new method to measure consumption, they're no different to non smart meters that have been used for years without sensationalism in the media. The only difference that makes them "smart" is the fact they connect to networks to communicate readings to the supplier and to an in home display.

The most likely explanation for apparent increases in consumption is that the ancient meter they replaced was knackered and under reading.

Really? -The Telegraph and the University of Twente Enschede in the Netherlands have a different, proven conclusion:

I have commented before about SM's. I am also an EDF customer (9 years now, always happy with their service) Yes, they offer me less expensive tariff if I take that tariff with of course, a SM fitted. Then I find that it may be less expensive than their latest online, paperless deal, or may not. Or be only slightly more.

I just take and transmit Dual Fuel readings every month on the excellent EDF website. What's the problem?

I saw a photo of the meters this Dutch place was testing. I think there was a a few rows of meters and most of them were not smart meters, there was even an old type analogue meter... I recognised most of them. There were two or three business meters which although termed "smart " they don t operate like a domestic smart meter.
I put it down to more naughtiness from StopSmartmeters.co.uk which was founded by the female UK equivalent of Chuck McGill out of the excellent prequel to Breaking Bad in Better Call Saul who had a fear.phobia to electricity.
Dr Elizabeth Evans ( non practicing ) was the founder of the UK stop smart meter arm. I heard her speaking on BBC radio many years ago in which she claimed she came out in a cold sweat the minute she went near a smart meter..
Chuck Mcgill was seen to be a fraud when Saul had a mobile secreted into his pocket when he was in court giving evidence and it had no effect on him.Its all in the head !

And their expert states the issue applies to electronic meters - which includes smart and non-smart meters. Focussing on smart meters alone just makes for more dramatic headlines than "all electronic meters from the last decade could misread"...
