Former housemate moved out - 118 won’t change address

  • She’s called a few on numbers located online or on leftover letters and everyone has been good with changing the address from hers to Sarah’s new one. All except 118.

    A slight clarification needed here.

I suspect all of them have been good with changing the address from hers to... "NOT KNOWN AT THIS ADDRESS".

They may have said 'Thanks for letting us know' but they won't change her address to a new one just on Jenny's say-so.

Pretty much what some others on here have already said I guess

The companies will have added a gone away marker to the account, which means no mail is sent out. Odds on the debt will be passed to a 3rd party who will find the new address of the debtor and then chase them that way.
Unless card co feel it's worth it and do it themselves.

My friend, let’s say Jenny, used to have a housemate, let’s say Sarah, who raked up quite a bit of credit card debt on three credit cards and ended up moving out without changing her address. For other reasons they do not speak anymore and this has always been a sore topic, with Sarah denying any debt.

Jenny does not believe Sarah would ever get the address changed if she could avoid it. After she moved out, Jenny has received a lot of letters that she can identify as being from credit card, often three a week ....

Do any of you know what she can do in order to not receive these letters and to get the address on the account changed without contacting Sarah? Does she have any rights at all as the current resident at the address where the account holder no longer lives?

    Welcome to MSE. :)

Does 'Jenny' have any rights to what?

She was never receiving these letters, they were addressed to 'Sarah'.

Why is 'Jenny' so irked by someone else's fiscal foolishness?
She was told, quote, ‘thanks for letting us know, we’ll get that changed’ by one, and was assured she’d not be receiving any more letters by another. And she hasn’t received any more letters from them and it’s been over two months where she used to receive at least one a week prior to this.

'Jenny' was never receiving these letters, they were addressed to 'Sarah'.

Just chuck them in the recycling box.

  • I realise that I may have worded this wrong — all I really wanted to know if she, as the sole resident, could request her address to be removed.

She’s not ‘irked’ by Sarah’s fiscal foolishness, she is worried about whether or not it could have an impact on her in terms of collection. It’s worth mentioning that we are both in our early to mid twenties and very unsure about whether or not any debt collection measures can be taken. She’d rather not be involved in that, and considering she receives at least a letter a week with no sign of it stopping, I thought I would ask, see if anyone had any advice. And yes, she is receiving these letters. They are coming through her mailbox, into her home, whether or not they’re addressed to her :-)

Okay...now you are being crystal clear.

'Jenny' does not need to worry. Collection measures can only be taken against an individual ('Sarah') and not an address. So if 'Jenny' was to check her three credit files, the 118 account would not be listed. :)

Why is she opening mail addressed to someone else.
Don't bin it or it will continue.

  • She isn’t :-)

Thanks everyone for your advice, she’ll continue to send the mail back and hope that it works.

Jenny doesn't need to worry as it will have no impact on her. Tell Jenny to stop worrying and get on with enjoying life. If Jenny has the time she can write 'no longer at this address' to anything for Sarah and put it in the post box.

    Hi there,

My friend, let’s say Jenny, used to have a housemate, let’s say Sarah, who raked up quite a bit of credit card debt on three credit cards and ended up moving out without changing her address. For other reasons they do not speak anymore and this has always been a sore topic, with Sarah denying any debt. Jenny does not believe Sarah would ever get the address changed if she could avoid it. After she moved out, Jenny has received a lot of letters that she can identify as being from credit card, often three a week. She’s called a few on numbers located online or on leftover letters and everyone has been good with changing the address from hers to Sarah’s new one. All except 118.

She has attempted to explain that this is not the correct address but they simply will not do anything but ‘leave a note’ on the account (which was a number Jenny could provide) brcause she’s not the account holder.

She’s tried sending the letters back but they still continue to arrive.

Do any of you know what she can do in order to not receive these letters and to get the address on the account changed without contacting Sarah? Does she have any rights at all as the current resident at the address where the account holder no longer lives?

118 will not stop sending the letter as it seems this is the only last known address they could use. It is their interest to keep sending remainder in the last known address to keep the case hot and strike when they have opportunity. Doing this cost them almost nothing as the cost of blanket mails are already covered irrespectively whether they send or not send Jenny those letters.

    There are two options here.

    - Return it until she get bored, write it in a large font using permanent ink marker "not known at this address" and drop it in the Royal mail red box. Just wait it until a lot of similar unsolicited letters and drop it in the royal mail box in one go.
    - If she has enough just bin it everytime she gets these letters
