Returning a new wardrobe

Hi all,
Im looking for some advice on a little problem I have. I ordered a wardrobe in September for my bedroom at a local furniture store. It was delivered yesterday but when the store tried to assemble it, they hadnt enough ceiling clearance to fit the wardrobe in when assembled.
The store said they cant sell it to anyone else but have suggested that I could get a carpenter to take off 1.5 inches from the base and it should fit in, but if its done wrong it will ruin the wardrobe (cost me £680). Store refuses to do it because it will cost them too much to do.
I really dont want to risk a botched job as i paid so much for it, do I have any rights for refusing the wardrobe for a refund or different wardrobe? I bought a few other items of furniture as part of the order and they are all fine. Ive read about a 7 day cooling off period after goods are delivered for online orders, but does anything similiar exist for orders placed in person locally?

Most furniture stores will usually expect customers to ensure the furniture will fit into the home & not agree to returns should the item prove too large.
Generally this is more applicable to large sofas though, as quite often the removal men have a heck of a job trying to actually get them past a staircase.
I don't think you'll find you have any rights to a refund or exchange unfortuntately, unless at the point of sale the shop offered a no quibble exchange.
You must be feeling pretty miffed after spending all that money on the wardrobe, but perhaps if you don't get anywhere with being able to negotiate something with the shop, your best option would be to at least get some advice from a carpenter.The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

Gutted for you. The store isn't obliged to do anything I'm afraid, as it wasn't their mistake, and the item isn't faulty.
I'd get a good carpenter to look at it, better to spend a bit more than waste your £6800 -
I am assuming that you measured your ceiling, and the wardrobe will fit JUST
, just that they are having trouble assembling it and then turning it into the right position.
We had this trouble with some very tall wardrobes that we assembled ourselves...the trick was to assemble them upright. We tried first on the floor, but there was not enough clearance to lift them, as there are only 2cm between the top and the ceiling.
It needed 4 people, but we got there in the end! (with quite a lot of swearing!)0 -
Did you buy it with a credit card? If so you may be able to use its T&Cs to get a refund.0
