    Quite simply, instead of sheets of plasterboard screwed to the framework, they nailed lots of thin wooden battens, then just plastered the whole lot. The plaster "grips" by squidging between the battens. That's it.

    Taking a ceiling down is always messy - doesn't matter what it is. If it's plasterboard and artex, it's going to be as bad.
