I have to eat consomme soup for 24 hours before a medical procedure next week The only one I can find to buy is Baxter beef consomme and that is very expensive. Are there any. alternatives. Can I buy Minestrone soup which is clear and then drain off. Whatever I have it must be clear. Any suggestions please.

I drank chicken stock cubes when I had mine, surprisingly tasty. Also tinned chicken noodle soup with the bits drained out.

I would make my own instead of all the hidden salt and nasties in shop bought. https://www.greatbritishchefs.com/how-to-cook/how-to-make-consomme

If you insist on shop bought as it’s only for 24 hours, Baxter’s is very reasonable at £1.25 a tin at Sainsbury’s.
    Waitrose chicken consomm! is £1.20

Good luck with your procedure x

    Bovril? Drained French Onion soup?
  • I had the same issue before having a Colonoscopy earlier this year. I purchased Heinz Chicken Noodle soup and drained off the noodles. It was a cheaper alternative. When I contacted the hospital after receiving my instructions they advised me any clear soup was OK as long as it was drained off

I think from what the OP is saying, it needs to be a clear soup whereas tomato soup is creamed so not clear.

I have had a colonoscopy earlier in the year and it is not very pleasant . Good luck.I was faced with the same situation about having CLEAR soup twice on the before the procedure. i brought Heinz soup and once had Chicken Noodle and the later in the day Minestrone soup both drained which was imperative. It gave me a small element of variety. I actually had 2 cans on each occasion which the hospital said was allowed as long as it was drained.. At the moment Tesco is selling 6 tins Heinz soup for £4 so this an option you might consider. It is certainly a much cheaper option than the Baxter consomme soup.

I had a colonoscopy earlier this year too, in fact proceedure for camera at both ends. Not great however I was sedated as I have a strong gagging reflex in my throat.

Anyway, you are never going to get full on anything clear and yes, it needs to be clear so you are "properly prepped", that means no bits in the clear liquid too (eg stock cubes).

I just took a view of just having clear lemonade and as variety, just water. I think I could have had clear apple juice but figured there was no point as having clear food would probably make me hungry.

When you have no option but not to eat, for a good reason, it is surprising but you can switch off the desire for food for a day. I am not exactly thin by any means and love my food BTW. What you don't want to do is obscure their view with their flexible camera when they do the proceedure meaning you'd have to go through it again.

Another way you could trick your brain into thinkiing you are eating, is to put the lemonade in a soup bowl and drink it with a soup spoon.
