Chrome Opens Javascript Links as "about blank"

Options
Hey all.

Weird one this! I'm using a Lenovo Ideapad y510p running Windows 10 and I'm using Google Chrome. For the past few weeks whenever a website uses javascript to make a pop up open a new tab with "about blank" will open instead with no contents in the tab.

I've made sure Javascript is enabled in the browser, made sure java is upto date, cleared my cache, cookies and history, disabled all extensions one by one to find out if one of those was the culprit, to no avail. I've even created a new "profile" but it's still the same. I also checked Firefox and Microsoft Edge and it's the same on all of those too, which leads me to think it is something to do with my laptop.

I have also restored to a previous point, also to no avail. Also ran virus and spyware scans which didn't find anything.

Does anyone else have any suggestions on what else to try, please? I did Google before posting this thread but of the little threads I could find, they were all aimed towards developers and I am an end user.

Thank you.

Try to click on a link while pressing CTRL. Sometimes if there is a pop-up blocker or antivirus, it allows browser windows to open.

Also, instead of disabling the add-ons one by one, try to open the browser in safe-mode.

Could you give us an example of a website that doesn't open as it should?

Hello. Just tried the CTRL thing and nothing happens.

I've just tried Chrome in Incognito mode (Google said it's the same as safe mode?) and I still get the blank tab.

One example is the British Gas site. It works fine...until I click to submit a meter reading, and then I get the about blank tab with nothing in it.

Have you tried another browser (e.g. Firefox, Opera, Edge) to rule out a browser problem? Or tried using another device (phone, tablet)? If the same thing happens in them then it sounds like a website problem not your problem.

Javascript and Java are two totally different things
