Do I have any rights?

Hi.
I have been living in my grandmothers house for 2 years while she has been living with an aunt who has taken care of her but she has recently passed away.

I have been paying the bills and paying for repairs and kept it in good order whilst I have been there.
I am beginning to worry now that my Nan has passed that the other members of the family will want to kick me out.

My aunt has always said that I was welcome to stay there as long as I wanted. I’m worried about my uncle, who is money grabbing but does/has done nothing for the family.

Could anyone give me any advice on where I stand please? I don’t want to have to move out when I’ve done so much work on the house to get it so nice as it was in a bad state when I moved in.

Any help would be great. Thanks in advance. :)

  • Did you grandmother have a will, if so who is the executor?
  • I think it’s another aunt.
  • If your nan wanted you to stay in her house then that will be in her will I expect.

If it’s not then you’ll have to move, nothing to do with money grabbing, the executor has a legal responsibility to carry out the will.
  • Thank you for your help. Very much appreciated

Not necessarily. If the house has been left to other parties who are happy to have a tenant (at whatever rent, if any, they feel is appropriate), OP could stay. Or if OP could afford to get a mortgage and buy the house she could stay.

You need to know what is in the WILL.

    Ask one of executors.

And if she did not leave a will you need to look at the intestacy rules

Op is a grandchild and mentions two aunts and an uncle, as well as maybe a parent still alive, so he’s unlikely to inherit that way.
