Changing tariff with same supplier

I asked to change to a different variable tariff (no exit fees or fixed term) with the same supplier. I thought as I wasn't changing supplier the change would be immediate, but I was told I would have to stay on the more expensive tariff for another two weeks until my usual billing date.
Does anyone know if this is right?

Most of the information I've found is to do with changing suppliers.

Depends on the supplier. Some will wait until the next billing date, others will do it straight away. Depends what systems they have running which may determine the options.
