I have used ebay 3 x now to buy the latest office, not had any problems and each copy was <£5.
as with any purchase on ebay you need to ensure that the seller is genuine and has good feedback. pay with paypal and if you don't receive your code, it doesn't work or if the seller refuses a refund then paypal will give you your couple of £'s back.
when you receive the code you goto microsofts website and enter the activation code supplied before downloading the software. once microsoft is happy the code is genuine then you are able to download the relevant version of office.
i do have concerns that you may be downloading some nasties with the software but as you are using microsofts website the only downside i can see is that it is a one time code so if your pc blows up you are not able to use the code again.
so your idiom in this instance (& with a lot of software) is not relevant"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0 -
LibreOffice of course - totally free :-)0

Until I retired from designing and printing business stationery and other products, I used MS. Office and Publisher. When those products moved on and in the case of Publisher stopped being produced, I used Open Office. I still use OO and have not found anything that I cannot do with it. Downloading the latest setup from Apache* presents an Installation of any or all of the features. These are: -
Writer (word processor) Writer creates letters, books, reports, newsletters, brochures, and other documents.
Calc (spreadsheet) ...
Impress (presentations) ...
Draw (vector graphics) ...
Base (database) ...
Math (formula editor)
All of these can be setup to convert Microsoft Office equivalents. Libre Office is very similar I am informed, but I have only used Open Office.
*Apache has the official download: https://www.openoffice.org/download/I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

Why complicate things?"The Holy Writ of Gloucester Rugby Club demands: first, that the forwards shall win the ball; second, that the forwards shall keep the ball; and third, the backs shall buy the beer." - Doug Ibbotson0

Watch formatting of a slightly complex document fall apart when it goes from Libre Office to Word or vice versa. Or spreadsheets fail because formulas don't work.0
