Help Needed - Possible Slave Labour

Hello, good afternoon.
I will get straight to the point.

My Sister in law and her Boyfriend have gone to Netherlands to work, they got offered a job in a restaurant (I won't name the name and the location yet).
They took the job and have been working since last Tuesday, however they are working from 10:00 morning to 23:00-00:00 night time.
So that is 14 hour shifts.

They are getting paid 30 Euro DAILY.
Surely there is a minimum wage?
The owners of the restaurant are Chinese.

Another topic is:
- The food this restaurant is using are out of date (especially meat).
- The owners treat them bad, I.E. Swearing at them, calling them names and making them do everything, while other works sit back and relax.

They were supposed to help them get a bank account but now the owners aren't, they would rather pay cash to them. I repeat: 30 Euros Per day for a 14 hour shift 6 days a week.

If this is illegal, what can they do about it.

Thank You.

They can walk away and find another job!

They can also report the restaurant to the local equivalent of environmental health for the outdated food, and they can leave and find a better job that's not flying under the radar. ( Presuming that they do have the right to work there. )
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • The thing is, they can't walk away they are waiting for their pay and also the Managers have all their documentation!

Were they travelling on British passports?

If their "employer" won't return them, can they not report them stolen and get emergency replacements issued.

Why did they hand over their passports in the first place?
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

They were travelling on Hungarian ID Cards, although they lived in Britain beforehand.

The Management have apparently been threatening them and making claims their family is in the "M!!A!FI...A!", so I guess you could say they were forced into giving it.

I have managed to find a website to report all this to the Dutch Authorities to the Inspectorate SZW (the Ministery of Social Affairs and Employment) about a possible violation of social laws whilst working in the Netherlands.
  • If they won't hand the iD back they should report it to the police and attend the nearest embassy for replacement documents.

Didn't they discuss wages before they went?
    Or were they lied to?

I'd have suggested the same as the previous poster - police and relevant embassy.

It's not really a 'overseas holiday' issue.

Would it not be Triads rather than !!!!!? Or are they linked in some way?

Why is Maf1a edited out and Triads not?
