Do we have to level the subfloor before laying wooden flooring ?

The fitter suggests using self-levelling compound to smooth the any unevenness of the current concrete floor.
I looked up and just realise this compound might be near 2.5cm thickness which would be lost as part of the height to ceiling.
We are not keen if losing this height to ceiling considering it's only 2.4m high right now.
What's your experience with the minor uneven subfloor before laying down the wooden planks? Would really appreciate someone to share.

It depends on how uneven the subfloor is, you may get away with it if it's really minor or the floor may crack/detach/bulge. Self levelling compound thickness also depends on your currently subfloor condition, I just did my kitchen floor few weeks ago and I only poured about 3mm of SLC on average.0
