Won't get Warm Home Discount if switching

This is for a friend who I asked if they would like to have a reward if they switch to my new supplier Octopus.

She rang her present supplier who told her she will lose her discount if she switches. Is this correct? She is not in the core group.

  • she needs to have applied by the correct date and be a customer on the "qualifying" date , no matter which company

so if she has applied to present supplier , she needs to be still being supplied by them on the qualifying date , after which , she can move
  • So she was with her present supplier in July so that means she can switch and she was given wrong information. Thanks.
  • 1: did she apply for the discount?
2: what date is the qualifying date?
  • As your friend is in the Broader group, if your friend leaves before they receives payment of their WHD, then yes, they will lose out with that company.

Your friend could always apply for the WHD with Octopus, but not all companies have exactly the same qualifying criteria. If I were your friend, I would wait for payment from their current supplier, and then switch, if they want to.

  • The rules are different for the core group, which I think the person above is mentioning.

If they are in the core group, then whichever supplier supplies a person on the qualifying date, this is the company which pays them the WHD (assuming the supplier is part of the WHD scheme)

Correct. However, I found what you put to be unclear. The qualifying date for broader group is the application time-period set by the energy supplier. Some companies, like Utilita, had a two-week period. Others are much longer.

The date set by Ofgem for payments to be made, is any time up to 31 March. Some companies pay much earlier. Others pay around the date set.

" so if she has applied to present supplier , she needs to be still being supplied by them on the qualifying date , after which , she can move "

From what you said, the OP's friend could switch after the qualifying period and still get paid. This is not true. They could only switch when payment is in their account. If they left before this, they would not get paid.

If I have misunderstood, then please accept my apologies.
