    I am with xylophone on this one. Getting reemployed and buying a property so you have somewhere to live in retirement seems the most pressing need here.

    I suspect, though, that if the OP has reached mid 50s, earns in the £70k region and has no assets and virtually no pension, then (even allowing for a divorce) the more pressing need may be to review the expenditure side of the equation.
