Toying with the idea of buying a domain and setting up a legit sounding email address to email potential new employer.
So is this for a job you're actually in and you need a retrospective reference or are you applying for something new and are going to give them a phoney email address in the hope that they ask you for a reference about yourself ??
Does this mean that the fall-back job didn't happen ?

Opened the post yesterday to a reference request by good old snail mail!
The reference requested by post went to the trouble of actually providing a copy of the 'new employee to be' application form filled out where they name references by handwriting as part of the application form.
There was a return s.a.e and no mention of conducting conversations by email or phone.
My current place of works operates on an if no one remembers you then the reference request doesn't get a response.0 -
I would say most email in my experience, but yeah, if you're trying to register a domain name so you can write your own reference I would say that's probably one of the worst ideas I have heard.
When you register a domain they will need your details and they will be public so it will be obvious you are the registrant.
There are ways of hiding this but they are not guaranteed.0 -
If you think that's a good idea, I dread to think of what you regard as a bad idea....0

It did thankfully except they are asking for a reference from my last two places of employment. The very last one I will get a stellar reference however Im not so certain about the one before. Trying to cover all bases since I dont want to potentially lose two roles when I had one safe.0 -

Thank you for the info - Im leaning against it now. Lastly do you think they would go to all the trouble to trace the registrant of the domain name? Ive seen some pretty good ones available that Im sure they would take at face value?0 -

:rotfl: :rotfl: do you realise how stupid an idea what you're suggesting is ? You're flitting from job to job with the risk of a poor reference from a previous employer and planning to cover this by faking a reference0 -
I doubt most employers would look up the domain name registrant - unless something about the email address looked odd to them. They might, for example, be more familiar with your old employer than you imagine.
I don't think anyone will advise you this is a good idea!
References these days are often confined to confirming your dates of employment and job title anyway.0 -
Most organisations would email the reference but if it goes to a personal email address rather than a business one this would be checked it is legit.
Depending on the role expecially if it involves safeguarding they should verify the reference over the phone.0
