Insurance company want to share the claim?

I am currently in the middle of a claim with my travel insurance company after i had my passport and personal belongings stolen whilst abroad. i have provided all the details (including police report) and they have now asked my for the details of my home/contents insurer as they "may seek a contribution from the other company once your claim is settled."
This is the first i've heard of this, i'm a little concerned to get another insurance provider involved as (correct me if i'm wrong) it'll end up affecting my premium for next years travel insurance as well as home/contents insurance?
Can i just not provide them with my home insurance policy details? do i have to provide them? I'm already resigned to an increase in premium of my travel insurance in future, i'm concerned that if my home/ contents increases too I might as well just not claim?
Any help/ advice would be greatly appreciated

No you cannot decide not to comply with the terms and conditions and expect the insurer to comply with their side of the bargain.
I don’t think claims history does affect travel insurance but it would for contents.
Yes it’s right to be concerned as it will cause delays/disputes.
What’s the size of the claim? (a few hundred is probably not worth claiming after excesses and future increases).0 -
thanks for the reply lisyloo
the claim is for a stolen passport, the cost of emergency passport, travel costs to the embassy, and the new flight home that i had to book. I was also claiming for some headphones that were stolen. in total i calculated the claim to be around £750.
from what i can see the headphones are the only thing that may be covered also by my contents insurance. Can i just remove them from my claim now as its really not worth affecting my home/ contents premium for the next XX years just for the sake of a £200 set of headphones.0 -
You’d need to ask you travel insurer, but why is your passport not counted as a personal possesion and covered under your contents insurance?
Are you sure it’s not covered on contents?0 -
Travel contribution claims don't normally effect HH insurance premiums.
I'm sure there is ABI guidance on it somewhere, I can't recall the agreement in place.0 -
If another policy exists that provides cover for some of the items under the claim, yes... they can do this. It is likely a term under your policy that you must give this information. They may even stipulate that they can decline your claim if you fail to do this (even if you decide to withdraw the headphones and passport).
You may have to consider withdrawing the claim in full if you don't want to claim on your contents cover. Alternatively, you may find yourself under a little scrutiny if you withdraw the expensive headphones, as this may tick a fraud concern marker with the travel insurer.
I'd also check your contents cover for any wording about declaring losses even if you didn't claim. This is technically something that under the umbrella of your contents insurer, it may be a stipulation that you have to declare any losses to them.
If it were me I'd just give the details to the travel insurer and take it on the chin. Lesson learned for next time..... know your cover before you claim!0 -
thanks all.
definitely lesson learnt. i checked the terms of each policy (which is why i thought the travel insurance was the logical one to claim on), but i didn't for a second think they would try to share the settlement out with my other insurers.
I'm going to fully cooperate with the travel insurer and just hope the premium isn't affected with my home/ contents insurer for years to come.0
