How do I update my name on the NHS records?

Hello.

I recently got married and have updated my name everywhere, including at the local GP (doctors) and the local hospital. Is there a separate place to ensure my details have been updated on all NHS records?

Will either someone from the doctors or the hospital have done it for me?

I’m so confused.

My name has definitely been updated at both places because I recently had an injury and have been to both places and my name was my married name. Will there be any NHS records with my maiden name on them or not?

Since the doctors and hospitals these days are all operated by computers, would my name not have been updated on the whole system? Is there even one system for the whole of the NHS?

Thanks.

Your records will all be linked together with your NHS number and also for your local hospital by your hospital number. Don't worry. Everything should be tied together.

I changed my name with my local hospital and GP albeit just a correction to spelling. They were still able to get information from a hospital at the other end of the country that I attended a few years before using my NHS number.
  • The different trusts have different systems that are not linked together.

I was told by my local hospital that I did not need to worry about updating them as long as I had told my GP practice as any referrals would have my new details on.

I did have to update them though as I had an ongoing referral with my old details on.

I am under another hospital as well for different reasons and had to update them separately as they are unable to access my records from my "home" trust.
  • To be on the safe side, change your name with your GP and dentist (if registered with one) and any hospitals or other NHS facilities where you're currently receiving treatment or being seen.

Within the same area their systems should talk to each other, but emphasis on 'should' plus if you're being seen somewhere in a different Trust area then they won't.

I wouldn't worry about places where you've previously been treated unless it was particularly recent as summary notes will have been sent to your GP and be on your record there. As others have said, your NHS number is the way they can identify you.

Forgot about the dentist - also had to update them!
