I have a Samsung Notebook N120 - same as this one, only black.

Its almost 10 years old but still in perfect working order. Obviously not used for internet as still running XP. Actually, its not used for anything:o
Some for sale on eBay but can't be bothered with that.
Is it of any possible use?

Would probably run one of the lighter Linux versions with ease and wouldn't have the XP security risks. If you don't want to try that or sell it, what about your local Freegle/Freecycle? Better then scrapping it. It might find a good home.0

I've got one of those, in black but with 2GB RAM, and it runs Arch Linux with XFCE desktop perfectly. You could use it as a print server, file server git server etc.,0

OK, I'll try Linux. Apart from knowing it exists, I'm clueless. Any pointers as to a 'lighter version'?I've got one of those, in black but with 2GB RAM, and it runs Arch Linux with XFCE desktop perfectly. You could use it as a print server, file server git server etc.,
Sorry, after my bold, you've lost me completely:o.0 -
There are many things that you can do with it, but only you know what type of use you would want out of it. Do you need a notebook? If not, get rid of it.
If you do, whack Linux on there and continue to use it.0 -
The issue is the Intel Atom N270 CPU. I have the same in my Netbook, but I have a half decent SSD within.
It is in use with Windows 7 32 bit. But, because of the CPU, it can only be utilised for one thing at a time. So you can browse, but don't try anything else at the same time.
It will be usable, but not very capable.0 -

Was just suggesting some uses, for example, a print server - if you don't have a wireless printer you can connect this laptop to connect to the printer and connect to it wirelessly from any of your other laptops. Similarly you could use the hard drive or attach a USB disk and store all you files there and connect to them from any of your other laptops.0 -
Xubuntu is probably you best bet to start with.

Thanks I'll have a look at Xubuntu
Now I understand. Already have wifi printer and 1TB external hard drive for backups, but I guess another copy of important/sentimental stuff, would be useful.0 -
As suggested earlier, there is always a use for older equipment, even if only as a learning tool.

If you are really stuck, and if it is possible to boot from usb, you could always try an x32 version of puppy linux
Puppy linux is one of the lightest usable versions around, it will make most devices fly.
Perhaps you could put chrome OS on it, probably still a better spec than a chromebook, but due to ages the screen may not be as good?0 -

....if it weren't for the frankly, horrible, CPU. It's worse than a CPU of even the cheapest Chromebook.0
