So, I regrettably signed up with Economy Energy a good while back as it was much cheaper than British Gas. Unfortunately, as much as the price stayed low (around 60% of what I was paying with BG) everything else was a complete disaster.
To keep it brief initially - I can send more detail later - this is a timeline of what happened:
So, that's where we are. The incompetence of almost everyone I dealt with at this company was astounding. On the phone they were always very friendly & helpful but there was always either no follow-up or there'd be errors made.
I know I may be jumping the gun but I know how these things can play out and I'm worried they'll end up saying that I do owe that amount because of how messed up everything was by Economy Energy. And that debt will go on my credit report (I'm expecting to buy a house in <12 months).
I won't be paying this so will go to court if need be. What worried me most is that as I was taking notes on the phone with the guy from Grant Thornton, he gave me his first name but told me he'd been advised to not give his surname. He said he's the only one in the office with that first name. That definitely rung alarm bells.
So, my question is - does anyone have any advice on what I should do now to best prepare/protect myself in the event that this does escalate? I'd rather start covering my back now instead of waiting for when it does become an emergency.
As said, if I should be posting this elsewhere, please let me know.

- They started charging me for gas & electric even though they failed to actually switch my gas over (they did reimburse me for extra spends quite rapidly once the issue was realised)
- When they actually did switch over the gas they created a new, separate account for the gas
- So, I was being charged for gas use on the account with gas & electric and being charged again for the gas in the new account
- I called and emailed numerous times to fix it which they always promised to do but the next month I would always receive notification of debt (I was paying DD)
- Of note, numerous times I sent them my meter readings, was very clear with them (sometimes even as an email with images) but they still on a number occasions managed to completely mess that reading up. I'd only realise this on the next reading.
- Economy Energy (understandably) ceased trading and I was switched with Ovo. I explained the issue with them and they understood and have corrected the issue on their end
- Economy Energy were taken over by administrators, Grant Thornton, and I've received a bill for over £400 due to this duplicated account
- The guy seemed understanding when I explained the issue and said he'd recalculate and get back to me within 2 weeks with the actual credit/debit amount
So, that's where we are. The incompetence of almost everyone I dealt with at this company was astounding. On the phone they were always very friendly & helpful but there was always either no follow-up or there'd be errors made.

Is the account with Economy Energy currently listed on any of your credit files? if so what is the current status?
If it isn't already, it's unlikely that it would suddenly arrive on your credit report, especially as long as you deal with any invoices when you receive them (and query if needed)Indecision is the key to flexibility
