What sort of budget are you thinking?

    £10k, £15k more/less.

    What style? Hatchback, SUV?

The folks on here will give you "best buy" advice I'm sure, if you give them some parameters to work with.

    Indeed.

If the O/P has a monthly payment in mind he could then extrapolate out the amount he could borrow over say, 4 years on a cheap loan.

I'd avoid something like an SUV which would tend to be more expensive and thus older

They may need/want an SUV/MPV from an access POV if they are older... mobility etc.

Both our dad's have gone for the higher access of SUV/MPVs, but then they are in their 70's!!
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

Yes similar situation here - parents in 70s, inlaws in 80s.

Some of the higher seated cars can work well. My FIL got a Nissan Note which has the high driving position and easy access without the cost of an SUV.

That said, theres lots of SUV styled vehicles that arent much of a premium.

It is not a matter of if he intends to or not, its down to how the insurance company perceives it in the event of a claim. Thats what matters.

Not sure why you cant grasp that and not sure why you are persisting with this.

    Everyone else has moved on.

Theres no suggestion he intends not to declare what hes doing so there wouldn't be a problem.
  • It's looking like it'll have to be that way. What I like about leasing is it's new car plus known cost. If I take a PL then it's going to be a used car, which means someone (me) still has to pick up the tab when a problem arises.

Why not buy an ex-demo car or similar pre-registered car? It's as good as new and has an almost full warranty at a discount price. Get a PL over say five years and then replace the vehicle and pay off the outstanding loan when the manufacturers warranty runs out. Then repeat as necessary. This also give the flexibility to get rid of the car early if your parents find they can no longer use the car, whereas a lease will be much more expensive to terminate early.

From the original post "I can work around that by insuring myself and dumping them on the policy."

"Working around" a constraint may mean that insurance is invalidated or a lease cancelled in the event of a claim.

Can you please move on? I've elaborated for you many times now to help you but you seem intent on "winning" an argument on the internet, to the detriment of the thread.

No reason you can't buy a brand new car with a personal loan, or the same car you would have leased.
